How did you do it?
I have become a yes man, but in a really positive kind of way. If someone invites me to something I try to say yes, where as in the past I would put it off or just decline. Maybe it was lack of self confidence or just apathy, I’m not sure, but now I say yes or I pick up the phone and make things happen. I’ll invite someone round for dinner or arrange to meet up, unless I have already said yes to someone else that is!
I truly got sick of saying to friends things like, “yes, we must meet up soon”, but in the back of both our minds we knew we wouldn’t get round to it. Now I try to go to everything I am invited to. I prioritise meeting up with friends and new people over everything else. That’s what’s important to me now. I make sure that my social diary is always full.
I met up with two friends I hadn’t seen in six years recently and we have now agreed to meet once per month. We laughed so much we cried the first time we met. Why would you not want nights like that in your life more regularly?
I would say I meet up with people 5-6 days of the week since the five ways to wellbeing made me realise the importance of connecting with friends and family. I enjoy motorcycling so joined a club and have met lots of new people there. I joined a French speaking group in Manchester and didn’t know a single person when I joined and now know lots of people. I meet my regular friends several times per week, I go to the cinema and for dinner with my Dad once per week and I also see my sisters at least once per week.
How would you describe your life now?
Full and rich. Meeting up with people puts a smile on my face as well as opening doors I didn’t know existed to things I would never have tried. My life is 99% full of things I want and like to do. I can’t imagine living any other way. The people around me are happier too as they are benefitting from me being happy as well as following my example and applying the five ways to wellbeing to their own lives. Everyone’s winning.
What advice would you give others who are thinking about taking up the five ways to wellbeing?
It’s really easy. Read the five ways and apply them to your own life. Everyone will be different and everyone will approach it in a different way and different rate but just apply them and let the good times roll!
