‘It feels good to give something back’
I give my time for five weekends through the winter months to help facilitate the local cross country league and give time helping out throughout the year with my running club. This is for all ages groups and abilities but feels extra special when supporting youngsters into the sport and helping give them a chance to achieve something, not necessarily winning but being a part of something and joining in. After spending 30 years in the sport myself its important to give something back.
How would you describe your life now?
Still stressful sometimes! But helping out and giving time to others helps to alleviate stress of day to day life and channel this into something positive. I enjoy time out to catch up with friends, chat, laugh and get stuff of my chest. I also enjoy the outdoors in all weather!
It feels good to give something back and appreciating what I have achieved myself in turn helps me to manage my stress.
What advice would you give others who are thinking about taking up the five ways to wellbeing?
Think beyond the next 5 mins to an hour, in the long run making time now pays later mentally, physically and encourages guilt free socialising.
Stepping out and giving time to others will not only give you a great buzz, it will inspire you and in turn could lead to interesting prospects, spending time with people who share the same interests can be a great eye opener and it can help you make connections you never though possible.
